Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Through the story of Saint Josephine Bahkita, we become witnesses to the utter transformation of her heart through the love, kindness, and friendship of Jesus. Her shocking quote, "If I were to meet the slave-traders who kidnapped me and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands, for if that did not happen, I would not be a Christian and Religious today…" strikes us and may scandalize us with many questions.
Bahkita presents to us her life through the cross. Her view of the mystery, wisdom, and beauty that is the cross. What wonder it brings us that she would kiss the hands of those who tortured her in love for God's providence to meet Him and become his bride. What joy she exuded from the kindness and patience she received from Jesus.
He offers that same kindness, gentleness, and patience to our broken hearts. May we find refuge and safety in His heart and love for us.
